The Sacrament of Baptism
Handing on your Faith
If you wish to hand on your faith to your child/children …
Mass and preparation
It is expected that you will begin to attend Mass if you are not a regular attendee. You can talk to Canon Paul after Mass about your child’s baptism. If your child is under seven years old you will be asked to attend some preparation sessions either in a group or individually at St. Alban’s church.
Children over the age of Seven
Older children over ‘the age of reason’ (7 years old but not yet reached the age of 18yrs) will be expected to attend a longer programme of preparation.
Preparation sessions for Baptisms will begin during the Autumn subject to Canon Paul’s availability and busy schedule. Watch out for dates in the Church Newsletter.
Your child will need at least one Godparent who must be Catholic (that is, confirmed in the Catholic Church) and over 16. They cannot be the mother or father of the child. Adults who are not baptised, or those who are baptised and/or confirmed in other Christian denominations, can be asked to participate in the ceremony and be witnesses.
Adults
If you are an adult interested in being Baptised and Confirmed into the Catholic Church you should start by joining with us in the regular Sunday Masses where you will receive a warm welcome. You can talk to Canon Paul about what how to proceed.
Godparents
To understand what it means to be a Godparent and why the Church asks that the above criteria are met please take a look at the video below on the ‘Role of Godparents’.
